Part 3: Several Kinds of DVD/Movie Subtitles
Subtitle is one kind of transcript or screenplay usually displayed on the bottom of screen with the purpose of a visual help for the deaf/hearing impaired and translating dialogs, or have viewers understand the spoken dialogue or the signs better. It can also be at the top of the screen if there is already text at the bottom of the screen... |Subtitle Definition
When using on DVD movies, subtitles are generally hidden unless viewers request it from a menu. Subtitles in DVDs are stored in VOB files, together with the main video and audio streams. DVD subtitle is just a stream of image files which appears one after another. Different from text -based subtitles, subtitles in DVD can't be edited, scaled or modified.
Here are different forms of DVD movie subtitles
Movie subtitles have two forms, open (hard) subtitles and closed (soft) subtitles.
- Open Subtitles cannot be removed or turned off for the contents are irrevocably built in video, for example lyrics of karaoke songs.
- On the other hand, closed subtitles are mainly used on DVD/Blu-ray allowing viewer to turn on/off or change subtitles if there are multiple language subtitle tracks. Soft Subtitle is involved in the actually DVD video, but is independent of the movie video. When ripping a DVD, it's usually titled "Track *". Generally speaking, you can rip Blu-ray/DVD in MKV losslessly or MKV with multi-track by clicking "Multi-Track MKV" button to output videos with soft subtitles using Dimo Video Converter Ultimate. Other options to create movies with soft subtitle is to convert Blu-ray to m2ts, or make 1:1 disc backup by copying Blu-ray/DVD to folder, make ISO from Blu-ray.
Besides, movie subtitles can be classified into internal and external subtitles. Internal subtitles are embedded in a file container along with video and audio streams, while external subtitles are separate files that are easier to edit and change.
Forced Subtitle appears on screen when a foreign/alien language is spoken, or showed in a sign, location, or other text, aiming to explain the meaning but can not be placed in the dubbing. When ripping a DVD, it's directly titled "Forced Subtitle". Note: Generally, only the foreign dialogues and signs that matter the movie plot are translated in the forced subtitle.
